Lunch club to serve up festive meal from just £5
Lunch club to serve up festive meal from just £5

A budget busting Christmas dinner will be served up from just £5 a head at a lunch club supported by Caldmore Housing Association and Age UK Walsall’s Taste for Life scheme.

The festive lunch club will take place this Friday (16 December) from 12.15pm to 1pm at the Brownhills and Walsall Wood Fellowship Centre in Beacon Way, Walsall Wood.

A three course meal including a starter, a traditional turkey or chicken dinner with all the trimmings and apple crumble or chocolate gateaux for dessert, will be served to visitors all for just £5 for members and £6 for non-members.

The lunch club which was only launched in May this year, in partnership with Taste for Life, regularly sees around 25 to 30 people attend each week.

It is just one of a number of lunch clubs across the borough supported by Taste for Life, which has helped more than 350 people since it was launched just over a year ago.

The service, which started in November 2010, was originally set up to help former ‘Meals on Wheels’ customers get hot and cold meals delivered to their homes and attend lunch clubs.

Since then Taste for Life has expanded, offering services such as Safe and Well Calls, where staff visit or call people to ensure that they are managing on their own, and cooking help for customers who want to prepare their own meals.

Julie Wakefield, Operations Manager for Taste for Life, said: “The meals provided at the lunch clubs that we support are always excellent value for money and this festive meal will be no different, with three tasty courses starting from just £5.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to a lunch club, whether they used ‘Meals on Wheels’ in the past or not, and they are always friendly and good fun. Many of those who attend the clubs have gone onto become really good friends.”

Davina Lytton, Chief Officer for Age UK Walsall, said: “The festive season can be a very lonely time for some people, especially the elderly and vulnerable.

“We would encourage those who may feel isolated to get in touch with us, as we can support you to attend a lunch club or simply give you a call every now and again to make sure you are safe and well.”
